Sybe Schaap

Sybe Schaap was born on the 20th of May 1946 in Lemmer. He has been a member of the Dutch Senate for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) since 2007. As well as this, he is the director and owner of two companies: ‘Onderzoeks- en Adviesbureau Schaap’ and ‘Schaap Research & Consultancy BV’

Political career[edit]

Between 1968 and 1970 he worked as a farmer. He has worked as a teacher in Philosophy at the VU University Amsterdam since 1970 and at the Charles University in Prague since 1992. Between 1981 and 1986 he worked as a policy advisor in the Dutch House of Representatives. From 1980 to 1984 he was a member of the city council of Brederwiede. Between 1985 and 1993 he was a dike-warden at the water board of the Noordoostpolder. Between 1993 and 1998 he was the chairman of the ‘Zuiveringsschap’ in West-Overijssel. A Zuiveringsschap is responsible for the water quality in a particular area. From 1998 to 2010 he was a dike-warden at the water board of Groot Salland. Since 2010 he has been professor of Water Policy and Governance at the University of Delft and Groningen.

Education[edit]

Between 1962 and 1964 he undertook teacher training in Zwolle. Between 1964 and 1967 he studied at the ‘Hogere Landbouwschool’ (an agricultural vocational university). From 1967 to 1969 he did an economy teacher training. He studied social science at the VU University Amsterdam between 1969 and 1973. In 1995 he received his doctorate in Philosophy. In 2002 he gained a habilitation in Philosophy at the Charles University in Prague.
