Roger Norman Freeman

Roger Norman Freeman, Baron Freeman, (born 27 May 1942) is a British politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the constituency of Kettering from 1983 to 1997, and was made a life peer in 1997.

Political Career[edit]

Lord Freeman first entered into politics when he contested the seat for Don Valley in 1979, he was then elected as MP for Kettering in 1983. He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Armed Forces between 1986-88, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health between 1988-90 and Minister for Public Transport between 1990 and 1995. In 1995, he was brought into the Cabinet by John Major as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. After being narrowly defeated in the 1997 general election, he was created a Lord shortly afterwards, on the 29th October 1997. As a member of the House of Lords he has been on a number of select committees including: The Select Committee on Science and Technology Sub-Committee 2, The European Union Committee 2006-10 and The Draft Detention of Terrorist Suspects (Tem-porary Extension) Bills (Joint Committee)2011-11.

Education[edit]

Lord Freeman was educated at Whitgift School, Croydon, and Balliol College, Oxford. Before entering Par-liament, he was a Chartered Accountant working for an investment bank.
