Lord Hardie

Andrew Hardie was born on the 8th January 1946. He is a former judge of the Supreme Courts of Scotland and a former Lord Advocate.

Political Career[edit]

After the Labour Party had won the 1997 General Election, Hardie was appointed Lord Advocate and subsequently became a life peer, receiving the title, Baron Hardie of Blackford in the City of Edinburgh. In his role in the House of Lords, he acted as the government spokesman during the passage of the 1998 Scotland Act. During his time in the House of Lords, Hardie served on the ‘Mental Capacity Act 2005 Committee’ from 2013 to 2014. He was made the Chairman of this committee. Hardie tends to focus upon policies concerning ‘Asylum, immigration and nationality’, ‘Care and rehabilitation of prisoners’, ‘Communities and families’, Crime, Civil law, justice and rights’, ‘Disability Issues’, ‘Energy and the Environment’ and ‘Social services’.

Education[edit]

Hardie was educated at St Modan’s High School, Stirling. He then moved on to study law at the University of Edinburgh.
