Political career[edit]

On 30 March, 1988 he was one of the founding members of Fidesz. In 1989, he participated in the Hungarian Opposition Roundtable meetings and tripartite political negotiations. In 1993 he became one of the party's vice-presidents. Between 1997 and 1999, and in May 2001 he became executive vice president of the party and chairman of the party. In the summer of 2002 he became president of the National Board, recently re-elected again in the 2013 general election. He became minister on July 8, 1998 from 3 May 2000 to direct the civilian secret services without portfolio. Between 1990 and 1993, and in 2002 and 2006, the Speaker of Parliament's National Security Committee, Vice-President from 2001 to 2002; 1994-1998 and between 2006 and 2010 a member of the National Security Committee. On 6 May 2014, the National Assembly elected him as President of the Parliament.
