Jože Tanko

Jože Tanko (born April 16, 1956) is a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia and the leader of the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenian: Slovenska demokratska stranka, also known by the acronym SDS).

Political Career[edit]

In 1995, he was elected Mayor of the Municipality of Ribnica, he was then re-elected for the second mandate in 1998. Since 2002, Tanko is also the councilor of the Municipality of Ribnica.

In 2000, he was first appointed to the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia. He was re-elected deputy in 2004, 2008, 2011 and last in 2014. Since April 2005, he is the leader of the deputy group of the Slovenian Democratic Party (Slovenian: Slovenska demokratska stranka - SDS). In all five mandates he was also a member of several working bodies of the National Assembly. This mandate he is a member of the Council of the President of the National Assembly, the Constitutional Commission and and the Electoral Comission.

He was not politically active before the Slovenian independence. In 1994, he joined the SDS and the following year he became the President OO SDS Ribnica, which he has been successfully managing for 15 years.

Education[edit]

In 1980, Tanko graduated from the Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana, majoring in carpentry.
