Janny Vlietstra

Griet Janny Vlietstra (born on April 13th, 1948 in Leeuwarden) is a Dutch politician. She is a member of the Labour Party. On June 7th, 2011 she was sworn in as a member of the Dutch Senate. Since May 1st, 2013, she has also been mayor of Haren.

Political Career[edit]

Vlietstra began her political career in Leeuwarden, where she was a member of the city council. Later she also became alderman. In 1995 Vlietstra was the mayor of Winschoten. In 2001 and 2007 she was reappointed. From 2006 Vlietstra was involved in the reorganization process of the municipalities of Winschoten, Reiderland and Scheemda. From June 2007 until 2009 Janny Vlietstra was also a member of the executive committee of the Ems Dollard region. On January 28th, 2009, she was appointed commissioner in the province of Drenthe.

She replaced the sick Huub Looman. Vlietstra resigned after the election in 2011 as a deputy. In October 2011 she became the acting mayor of the De Wolden municipality. On April 28th, 2012 Vlietstra she resigned and in September she became the acting mayor of Marum until May 1st, 2013. In 2013 she became the temporary successor of Mayor Rob Bats of the Haren municipality.

Education[edit]

Vlietstra studied cultural work at the School of Social and Cultural Work in Groningen from 1966 until 1970 and continued her studies with education training in Amsterdam from 1975 until 1977.
