Jan-Erik Enestam, Former Finnish Minister of the Environment and Defence, during The Berlin International Economics Congress 2010


Jan Erik Enestam, born on March 12, 1947, was the Secretary General of the Nordic Council from 2007 to 2013 and served within the Finnish government from 1995 to 2006 in various posts. He is the former Finnish Minister of Defense and the Environment.

Biography[edit]

Jan Erik Enestam started his political career at the municipal level. In 1991, he was elected to the Finnish parliament till 2007. In 1995, he was appointed to the Finnish government in which he served in several posts, such as Minister of Defense, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Environment. From 1998 till 2006, he served as leader of the Swedish People’s Party. In 2007, he joined the Nordic Council as Secretary general and kept that post till 2013.

Jan-Erik Enestam graduated from Abo Akademi University.
