Gilbert Barbier

Gibert Barbier (born March 3, 1940) is a French Senator representing the department of Jura and a member of the European Democratic and Social Rally Party (RDSE). Barbier also served in the French National Assembly before entering the Senate.

Political Career[edit]

Barbier entered politics in 1978 when he was first elected to the French National Assembly for the district of Jura. He served in the National Assembly until 1997, winning three reelections. In 1983, Barbier was also elected Mayor of Dole, a position he held until 2008.

In 2001, four years after leaving the National Assembly, Barbier was elected to the French Senate for the department of Jura, in Eastern France. Since entering the Senate, Barbier has served as the Vice-President of the Social Affairs Committee as well as a number of other committees including: the Parliamentary Committee for the Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Choices and the Assessment Committee on Social Security.

Education[edit]

Barbier studied medicine at the University of Caen and worked as a surgeon prior to entering politics.
