Christine Crawley
Christine Crawley, Baroness Crawley, was born on the 9th January 1950. She is a British politician who represents the Labour Party.
Political Career[edit]
Crawley became involved in politics because of her desire to gain funding for the youth theatre she ran. She decided to join the Labour Party and was soon made secretary of the local branch and was then made social secretary of the local women’s branch. After this she was elected as a district councillor for the South Oxfordshire District Council. Crawley was unable to win a seat in parliament at the 1983 General Election but only a year later she was elected as an MEP for Birmingham East. During her time as an MEP, she took a special interest in issues concerning women’s rights and gender equality.
In 1999 she decided to step down as an MEP. In 1998 she was created Baroness Crawley, of Edgbaston in the County of West Midlands. She was a Party Whip in the House of Lords from 2002 to 2008. During her time in the House of Lords she served on a number of committees. She served on the EU Sub-Committee A-Economic and Financial Affairs, and International Trade from 1999-2000. She also served on the European Union Committee during the same period. The last committee she served upon was the Refreshment Committee in the period 2010-2012.
Education[edit]
Crawley was educated at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls School in Birmingham. He then moved on to Digby Stuart College to train as a teacher. In 2013 she was awarded an honorary doctorate of health from Plymouth University.
