Baroness Gould of Potternewton

Joyce Brenda Gould was born on the 29th October 1932. She is a British pharmacist, trade unionist and politician.

Political Career[edit]

Whilst working for the Labour Party, Gould held the position of assistant regional organiser from 1969 to 1975. She then went on to become assistant national agent and chief women’s officer from 1975 to 1985 and after this she became director of organisation from 1985-1993. Gould was a member of the Joint Committee Against Racism in 1970. She was made a life peer on the 6th October 1993, receiving the title Baroness Gould of Potternewton, of Leeds in the County of West Yorkshire. During her time in the House of Lords, she has served on a number of committees. The first committee she sat on was the EU Sub-Committee C-Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy. She was on this committee from 1993 to 1997. She is currently working on the Affordable Childcare committee.

Education[edit]

Gould was educated at the Roundhay High School for Girls and the Bradford Technical College in pharmacy. In 1997 she received an Honorary Degree from the University of Bradford.
