WikiLeaks is an online non-profit media organization that publishes secret or private documents and information obtained from anonymous sources. It was founded by Australian activist Julian Assange and has attracted an enormous amount of world attention due to some of the highly sensitive government information it has published using the defense of government transparency and freedom of speech. Supporters argue that governments shouldn’t be hiding anything and that this information should be available to the public, and praise WikiLeaks for its efforts to promote freedom of the press. Critics, however, maintain that the leaking of classified documents, including diplomatic cables, can lead to an escalation of tension in foreign relations and can hinder [[National Security|national security]] efforts.
