Tim Hutchinson

Senator Tim Hutchinson was born on August 11, 1949, in Bentonville, Arkansas. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 and then, in 1996, he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Education

Senator Hutchinson graduated from Bob Jones University located in Greenville, South Carolina in 1972. He then went on to receive his Master’s in Political Science from the University of Arkansas in 1990.

Experience

Senator Tim Hutchinson began his political career in 1985 as an Arkansas State Representative. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Following his term in the House, he was elected to the U.S. Senate from the State of Arkansas in 1996. During his time in the House, Senator Hutchinson was on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Education and Labour Committee, and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Senator Hutchinson helped write the last two national transportation bills. He sponsored the child tax credit legislation, he was one of the keys figure in reauthorizing the welfare reform law in 1996, and was the chair of the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health. Senator Hutchinson was on the Patient’s Bill of Rights Conference Committee, created the Association Health Plans when he was the Chief Senate Sponsor of legislation, and co-sponsored legislation that addressed America’s nursing shortage with Senator Barbara Mikulski. Furthermore, he formed the Senate Biotechnology Caucus. During his time in the Senate, he addressed many educational issues. He helped form the Leave No Child Left Behind legislation during his time in the Health, Education, Labour, and Pensions Committee. He was also the sponsor of many bills that addressed labour law modernization and Occupational Safety & Health Administration reform. Senator was also a member of the Armed Services Committee, chairman of the Personnel Subcommittee, and the deputy whip of the GOP leadership teams in both the House and the Senate. For a bit of time, he was an instructor at John Brown University in Arkansas. Senator Hutchinson has been awarded many times over the years and has received the L. Mendel Rivers Legislative Award. Senator Hutchinson serves on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy and has spoken about the topic of U.S. Policy in Pakistan and Afghanistan at the National Press Club. As of 2011, he was a key note speaker at the International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, Germany.
