Stephen Gilbert was born on 6th November 1976 in Truro, England. He is a British Liberal Democrat politician, who was elected as the MP for the new constituency of St Austell and Newquay at the 2010 general election.

Education[edit]

He attended Fowey Community School and St Austell College before moving to Aberystwyth University to study International Politics in 1995 and later for a Masters degree at the London School of Economics.

Political Career[edit]

Stephen joined the Liberal Democrats in 1992 and became Cornwall's youngest ever councillor in 1998 aged just 21. Stephen was selected to stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the new Parliamentary seat of St Austell & Newquay where he increased the nominal Lib Dem share of the vote in 2010. Shortly after his election to parliament, Stephen became an Assistant Party Whip for the Liberal Democrats, and from 2011-12 he acted as the Liberal Democrat's backbench spokesperson for Defence.
