Sibrandes Poppema was born in Emmen, Netherlands, July 24th 1949. He is a professor of Pathology and serves as the President of the University of Groningen.

Political Career

In 1985, he became a part of the Faculty of Immunopathology at the University of Groningen. Afterwards, he was a professor of Pathology at the University of Alberta and director of Laboratory Medicine at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 1999, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen. During his time as Dean, he introduced the curriculum G2010, successfully merged the Faculty and Academic Hospital into the University Medical Center Groningen in 2005, and created the Healthy Aging Focus in 2006. Professor Poppema was appointed Honorary Consular General of the Republic of Korea in Northern Netherlands in 2011. He is the Chair of the Board of the Energy Academy Europe. Professor Poppema is a member of the supervisory boards for the Energy Delta Institute, the Energy Delta Gas Research, and INCAS3. He is a member of the board of the Arab European University Association. He has published more than 250 articles and is an expert on Hodgkin’s disease and has obtained patents on CD45 and Galectin. He has also founded two biotech companies.

Education

Sibrandes Poppema attended Gymnasium β, Ubbo Emmius Lyceum Stadskanaal, from 1962 to 1968. He received a medical degree from the University of Groningen and specialized in pathology from 1968 to 1974. In 1979, he received a PhD from the University of Groningen. His thesis focused on the Immunopathology of Hodgkin’s Disease.
