Sam Gyimah

He is a British Conservative Party politician. In October 2013, he became a Government Whip.

Political Career

Sam Gyimah was elected as the Member of Parliament for East Surrey in May 2010. In July 2012 Sam was appointed a Minister at the Department for Education (early years, early intervention and childcare) and Cabinet Office (constitutional affairs). Sam has previously been a Government Whip (2013-14) and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (2012-13). Prior to these appointments, Sam also served as a member of the International Development Select Committee and the Speaker's Committee on the Electoral Commission. Sam's work on the International Development Select Committee involved scrutinising UK aid and its effectiveness. Sam has a particular interest in how the private sector can be further harnessed to play an active role in development. Sam is a supporter of a number of local charities including the Tandridge Voluntary Services Council and St Catherine's Hospice. He is Vice President of Young Epilepsy in Lingfield.

Education

Sam has served on the Development Board of Somerville College, Oxford University, since 2004 and has brought that experience to bear in the ongoing debates around University fees and Access to Higher Education. In 2010 he contributed to an anthology of essays on Higher Education published by the Social Market Foundation. He is passionate about encouraging young people to positively engage in politics.
