Smart power is the combination of hard power and soft power policies. Smart power strategy involves the employment of a powerful military force while also implementing cultural and diplomatic initiatives in order to establish influence while maintaining integrity. Joseph Nye argues that the sole use of either hard or soft power will normally be futile, and that a mixture of the two is required in order to achieve success.
