The Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) was adopted in 1975 by 16 Mediterranean countries and the European Community under the framework of the [[United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP)|United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)]]. The regional agreement was devised with the key objective of enabling the contracting countries to better assess and control [[Marine Pollution|marine pollution]] as well as identify better solutions for effective development planning and [[Sustainability|sustainable]] resource management. Today,the MAP consists of 21 Mediterranean counties and the EEC who are committed to addressing the pressing environmental challenges in the region including [[Air Pollution|air]] and land-based pollution, [[Environmental Degradation|environmental degradation]], conservation and [[Climate Change|climate change]]. Although environmental protection forms the main component of the Action Plan, over the years there has been a greater focus on national and regional policies geared at sustaining and fostering social and economic growth in the region.
