In June 2000 he succeeded Lord Bingham of Cornhill as Lord Chief Justice. He retired from this post in 2005 and joined Blackstone Chambers as a mediator and arbitrator. He is the chairman of the Bank of England Financial Markets Law Committee. He has also served as Chancellor of the Open University of Israel since 2004.
