Editing Lord Hannay of Chiswick

David Hannay was born on the 28th September 1935. He is a British diplomat. 

==Political Career==

Hannay joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1959. He played an important role in the discussions that led to the UK’s entry in 1973 into what became the European Union. From 1984-1985, he was a minister at the British Embassy in Washington DC until he gained a promotion, becoming the ambassador and permanent representative to the European Economic Community, a position he held until 1990. After this he became the ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations. On 19th June, 2001 he was made a life peer, receiving the title Baron Hannay of Chiswick, of Bedford Park in the London Borough of Ealing. During his time in the House of Lords, Hannay has served on a number of committees. The first committee he served upon was the EU Sub-Committee A-for Economic and Financial Affairs, and International Trade, from 2001-2004. He is currently serving on ‘The Arctic Committee’. Hannay tends to focus upon policies concerning ‘Asylum, immigration and nationality’, ‘Education’, ‘Energy and Environment’, ‘European Union’ and ‘International Affairs’.  

==Education==

Hannay was educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford.  

==Notable Work==

He was the ‘Pro-Chancellor’ of the University of Birmingham from 2001-2006. He is currently on the Member Council for the University of Kent. From 2003-2004, Hannay was a member of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change from 2003-2004.
