Lord German

Michael James German, Baron German, OBE (born 8 May 1945), is a member of the House of Lords and former member of the National Assembly for Wales for the South Wales East Region. He was leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from 2007–08. In 1996, he was awarded the OBE for his public and political ser-vice.

Political Career

Lord German joined the House of Lords on the 24th June 2010. Prior to this he was the Group Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats for Cardiff City Council between 1983 and 1995. He was then elected Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in 1999. During his time as Leader he also held the post of Minister for Economic Development, Deputy First Minister of Wales, Minister for Rural Development and Wales Abroad and Shadow minister for the Environment, all for the National Assembly for Wales.

Education

Lord German was educated at the Open University and St Mary’s College.

Notable Work

Lord German worked as a Primary School Teacher for a year in 1966 and was then promoted to the Head of Music in various schools in 1967 until 1990. Following this he became Director of the European Division for the Welsh Joint Education Committee between 1990 and 1999.
