Joyce M. Johnson is a U.S. Rear Admiral and a former Surgeon General for the U.S. Coast Guard. She has extensive experience in the health field and is currently working as a physician in public heath in Chevy Chase, Maryland in the Washington D.C. Metro Area.

Professional Career

Joyce M. Johnson worked with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps from 1980 to 2003. In 1997, she was appointed as the chief medical officer and surgeon general for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) till 2003. She is the first woman to attain the position, as well as the first woman to hold a flag rank during active duty in the (USCG). She is part of the faculty at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, working from 1986 to 2011. Johnson previously held a senior position and later became the Vice-President of the Health Sciences in Health and Life Sciences Division at the Battelle Memorial Institute. She is a consultant to the Antarctica Program for the National Science Foundation since 1987. She currently works as a public health physician in the Washington D.C. Metro Area. Joyce M. Johnson has been awarded five-honorary doctoral degrees and is board certified in three specialty areas: Public Health and Preventative Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, and Psychiatry. She has had experience and worked with: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Mental Heath, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. She is a registered member of the Wesget Sipu Native American tribe.

Education

Joyce M. Johnson received her Bachelor’s Degree from Luther College and went on to receive her Master’s Degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa. She then received a medical degree from the University of Michigan.
