Johan Vande Lanotte

Johan Vande Lanotte was born on 6 July 1955 in Poperinge (Belgium). He is a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Flemish Socialist Party (SP.A).

Political Career

Vande Lanotte started his political career as leader of the cabinet of Louis Tobback, Minister of Internal Affairs from 1988 to 1991. Since 1995 he has been a councillor in Oostende. He is a former party leader of the Flemish socialists (SP.A) from between 2005 and 2007. From 1991 to 2007, Johan Vande Lanotte held a seat in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for SP.A. He was Minister of Internal Affairs and Civil Servants between 1994 and1998; Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Budget, Integration, and Social Economy between 1999 and 2003, and Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Budget and Public Companies between 2003 and 2005. In 2006, he earned the honourable title of Minister of State. A year later, he was elected as a senator. After the national elections on June 10th 2010, Johan Vande Lanotte became Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Consumers, and North Sea.

Education

He holds a doctoral degree in law from the University of Gent.
