Jeremy Beecham, Baron Beecham was born in 1944. He is a British Labour politician.


Political career[edit]

He became a member of the Labour Party in 1959, and was elected a councillor for Benwell, Newcastle, in 1967. He chaired the Social Services Committee on the council between 1973 and 1977 and he was Leader of Newcastle from 1977 to 1994, chairing the Finance Committee from 1979 to 1984. Between 1991 and 2004 he was the Chairman of the Local Government Association. Between 1991 and 1997 he was Chairman of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities. Since 2012, he is the Shadow Spokesperson for Justice and since 2010 he is the Shadow Spokesperson for Communities and Local Government. Between 2010 and 2012 he was the Shadow Spokesperson for Health. He was a member of Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Bill Committee (2013) and of Special Public Bill Committee (2012).


Education[edit]

He studied at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle upon Tyne, and then he went to the University College, Oxford where he graduated with honours in law. He became a solicitor.
