Hugh Bayley (born 9 January 1952) is a British Labour Party politician and Member of Parliament for York Central. He held the City of York seat from 1992 to the 2010 general election, when boundary changes took effect.
Political Career
Hugh Bailey was elected as Member of Parliament for York in 1992. From 1992 until 1997 he was a member of the House of Commons Health Committee. In May 1997 he became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Frank Dobson MP when he was Secretary of State for Health. Following this he served as a Minister at the Department of Social Security from January 1999 to June 2001. In July 2001 Bailey was appointed to serve as a member of the House of Commons International Development Select Committee, he was re-appointed after the 2005 and 2010 elections. Hugh Bailey is also a member of the UK delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and is the Assembly's President. Within the House of Commons. Bailey is a member of the Panel of Chairs.
Education
Hugh Bailey studied for his first degree at Bristol University, and did a postgraduate degree at the University of York. Before he entered the House of Commons as an MP he worked at the University of York as a lecturer in Social Policy and later became a research fellow in Health Economics.
