He was appointed a representative hereditary peer in Parliament in 1999. He sits on the Government benches in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat peer since his appointment in 2010.

Education[edit]

He attended the Hewett School, Norwich before going up to Aberdeen University where he graduated with an M.A. in 1988.
