Bill Cash (MP)

Sir William Nigel Paul Cash was born on May 10, 1940. He is better known as Bill Cash, a British Conservative politician. Bill Cash has been a Conservative Member of Parliament since 1984, and has represented the Stone constituency since 1997. He is currently a member of the European Scrutiny Committee and Chairman and founder of the European Foundation think tank. In addition to constitutional and European affairs, Bill has a considerable interest in the developing world. He is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Sanitation and Water in the Third World, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. Cash is Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Committee for Tanzania. In 2014, he was knighted in the Birthday Honours for political services.

Political Career[edit]

Cash entered the British Parliament in May 1984, when he was elected as MP for Stafford. Bill Cash remained his position as MP for Stafford until he was elected to the newly created constituency of Stone in 1997, being re-elected in 2001, 2005, and 2010. He has been chairman of various parliamentary committees, such as the European Scrutiny Committee, where he was elected without opposition as Chairman in September 2010. Furthermore, he has been a member of the Select Committee on European Legislation since 1985, and was elected chairman of the Conservative Backbench Committee on European Affairs (1989–91). In addition to constitutional and European affairs, Cash has been strongly involved in the developing world. He is chairman of a number of All Party African committees, which include the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Sanitation and Water in the Third World, Malaysia, Kenya and Uganda, and the All-Party Parliamentary Committee for Tanzania. Cash has also been involved in extra-parliamentary activities such as the European Foundation and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Education[edit]

Cash was born in London to a political family which included several Liberal Members of Parliament. He grew up in Sheffield and was educated at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire before attending Lincoln College, Oxford where he took a MA in History. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1967, he practised constitutional and administrative law.
