  • 2001-2003: Minister of the Interior of the Government led by Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas.

Awarded the Cross of Officer of the Order of Vytautas the Great by President Valdas Adamkus

  • 2000-2004: member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. Worked on the committees of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Legal Affairs, was Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of the Seimas.
  • 1997-1998: adviser to President of the Republic of Lithuania Algirdas Brazauskas on political affairs.
  • 1992-1997: member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania; worked as Deputy Chairman of the Seimas. Was head of the working group formed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania to prepare the ratification of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms as well as of the State Administration and Local Government Reform Commission.
  • 1990-1992: head of the parliamentary activity group of of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party Secretariat and an adviser of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party Secretariat Parliamentary Group of the Supreme Council – the Reconstituted Seimas.
  • 1976-1990: (until the restoration of independence) was engaged in scientific academic work and party activities.
  • Since 1990: member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, Vice-Chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party.

History[edit]

Born on 8 September 1953 in Kaunas, into a family of science teachers. His mother was an associate professor and his father was a professor at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (currently – Kaunas University of Technology). He was elected 4 times to the Seimas (1992-1994, 1996-2000, 2000-2004, 2004-2008).
