Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Article on the iCulturalDiplomacy portal
Contents
Step 1: Create an Account
- Access the www.i-c-d.de webpage and click on ‘create account’ in the top right corner of the screen
- Create your personalised username and password and then proceed to complete creating your account.
- Once this is done you will be able to create, edit, upload any pages on the iCulturalDiplomacy platform.
Step 2: Create an Article Page
- In the search bar, type in the title of your article. Make sure you capitilize all words (except prepositions) as this will appear as the title of your page once completed.
- Unless the article has already been created, the title should appear in red in the sentence: ‘Create the page “title” on this wiki’
- Once you click on the red font-ed title in the sentence above, it will redirect you to the ‘Creating *title*’ with a content box underneath for your article.
Step 3: upload a photo
- Search on Google for a relevant photograph that relates to the article
- IMPORTANT: make sure you click ‘advanced settings’ and apply the ‘free to use and share’ filter so as to avoid any copy right issues
- Save the photo with an easy name on your desktop as you will need to copy the name exactly into the content box
- On the left hand side of your content page there will be an ‘Upload file’ bullet point. Right click it and open it in a new tab.
- Go to the ‘Upload file’ tab and click the ‘Choose file’ button where you will then choose the relevant photo from your computer. Finally, click upload file.
- Back on your original content page, input the following formatting at the top of the content box
File:photo.jpg|400px|thumbnail|left
replace the photo.jpg with the file name of your photo EG: File:Christmas.jpg|400px|thumbnail|left
IMPORTANT: make sure that the type of file is correct, otherwise the photo will not appear. E.g: jpeg, jpg, png
Step 4: inputting content
- Select and copy the content of your article from your computer and paste it below the photo format in the content box.
- Skim through your article to see that all sentence lines start directly from the left side of the box (without any spaces before it) as otherwise it will not appear correctly once uploaded.
- If there are any relevant institutions or conventions that are mentioned in the article, they should be hyperlinked.
- Select the name in the content box and then press the tab right above the content box with a picture of the world on it. This will place brackets around the selected words
EG: Sydney Opera House -> [Sydney Opera House] Find a link to the institutions page and copy it in the brackets as illustrated below Sydney Opera House
IMPORTANT: leave a space between the link and the name of the institution This process is done so that when the article is uploaded, the content ‘Sydney Opera House’ will appear in blue, and when clicked, will re-direct the reader to website provided.
Step 5: Place the article in a category
- Depending on what section of the iCulturalDiplomacy platform the article is meant for, a specific category format will be needed.
- Corporations pages:
Category:Corporate Cultural Diplomacy: Private Sector Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy
- Parliamentarian pages:
- This is more complex as there are many different categories, depending on the nationality of the person in question. A list of the categories will be sent by the iCulturalDiplomacy team shortly.
- Celebrities pages:
Category: Celebrities Contributions' to the Field of Cultural Diplomacy
- International CD news articles:
Category:International Cultural Diplomacy News
- Discussions on CD articles:
Category: Discussions on Cultural Diplomacy
- Research on CD publications:
Again, this is more complex as there are many categories. Please ask for the format of the categories if necessary Once you have selected the appropriate category, copy and paste it below the body of the article in the content box.
Step 6: Hyperlink Sources
- You will have accumulated a number of sources in the creation of your content. These should be displayed below the body of the article (above the category (the category is always the last thing in the content box))
As with the hyperlinking in the body itself, you need to select the URL name and click the globe icon above the content box EG: www.bbc.com -> [ http://www.bbc.com ]
IMPORTANT: Once in the brackets, the URL name must begin with: http://www., it will not show up properly if it begins with ‘www.’ You must then insert a more appropriate name for the hyperlink as shown below:
Again make sure to leave a space between the URL and the name Once uploaded, the hyperlink will appear in blue as ‘Official BBC Webpage’ and will direct the reader to the URL provided.
Step 6: Upload your article
Once Step 1-> 5 have been completed, click on the ‘Show preview’ button below the content box. You will then be able to inspect whether the page is aesthetically correct and if there are any formatting issues. If you are happy with the preview, click the ‘Save Changes’ button Your article will then appear on the iCulturalDiplomacy platform
