Boris Pistorius, born March 14, 1960 in Osnabrück, is a German politician (SPD) and since February 2013, Lower Saxony Minister of Internal Affairs and Sports in the cabinet of Stephan Weil. From November 2006 to February 2013, he was Mayor of the city of Osnabrück.

Political Career[edit]

From 1996 until February 2013 he was a member of the Council of the City of Osnabrück. Before his election as mayor, Pistorius was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and their financial spokesman. From 1999 to 2002 he was also honorary mayor. At the municipal election in 2006, he sat in the mayor election on and won with 55% of the vote succeeding Hans-Jürgen Fip (also SPD).

On 19 February 2013 Boris Pistorius was sworn in at the inaugural session of the 17th Lower Saxony state parliament as Minister of the Interior and Sport. Even before the state election in Lower Saxony in 2013, Pistorius had taken a position on current domestic issues. When he took Pistorius attempted to create a new culture for immigrants and refugees. Its aims include more humane asylum policy. He also spoke on several occasions to advocate receiving a higher number of Syrian refugees because of the civil war in Syria.


Education[edit]

Pistorius studied Law in Osnabrück and Münster. Following this he completed a traineeship at the Higher Regional Court of Oldenburg, where he passed the second state examination in 1990. Among other things, he was employed by the Office of the Minister of Lower Saxony's Minister of the Interior. From 2002 until the takeover of the Office of the Mayor, he was Senior Director of Regional Education Authority in the Department of Osnabrück.
