Birgit Schatz, born on December 9th, 1969 in Salzburg, is an Austrian politician and Member of Parliament for the Greens (Die Grünen).
Political Career
Between 2000 and 2006, Birgit Schatz was the country manager of the Greens Salzburg. She has been Member of the Executive Committee of the Greens Salzburg since 2000 and member of the General Board of the Federal Greens since 2003. In October 2005, Schatz was the first placed candidate after the internal elections for the National Assembly elections. She was elected with 55% of the vote. Schatz has represented the Greens since October 2006 in the National Council. Birgit Schatz is the spokeswoman for the Green parliamentary group and her main focuses include social and educational policy.
Birgit is also a leading member of the work and social affairs, science and tourism committees. She is a substitute member for the business, education, home affairs, and defence committees. In addition to being in the Federal and National Council, Schatz is a member of the European Parliament.
Education
After high school, she attended the Federal College of Business Administration in Saalfelden, which she completed in 1989. From 1989 to 1993, she studied Art History at the University of Salzburg and from 1990 to 1997, Political Science, Journalism and Communication at the University of Salzburg, where she successfully obtained an MA degree. She participated in scientific projects and took over the leadership of the Students' Union Advisory Service at the University of Salzburg between 1997 and 2000. She was also a student’s representative, Speaker of the Students' Union University of Salzburg and deputy commissioner of the Social Salzburg University.
