Joris Backer, born on the 11th of July 1953 in Leiden, the Netherlands and is a member of the Dutch Senate.

Political Career

Before his political career, Backer worked in the private sector. He was, among others, Director of Corporate Law of Amsterdam airport and vice-president of Shell in Russia. From 2008 till 2011 Backer was a national board member of D66. Since 2008 he has been the chairman of the ‘Hans Mierlo stichting’. He is a member of the Dutch Senate on behalf of the Democrats 66 Party (D66).

Education

Backer studied Dutch law at the University of Leiden till 1978 and Political Science at the DEA-Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris between 1978 and 1979.
