About Total S.A.[edit]

Total is a global energy company based in France, with approximately 98,799 employees worldwide. The company aims to promote harmonious and lasting relationships with all the communities in which it operates its oil and gas activities. Its businesses covers the entire oil and gas chain, from crude oil and natural gas exploration and production to power generation, transportation, refining, petroleum product marketing, and international crude oil and product trading. Total is also a large-scale chemicals manufacturer. In 1991 the name of the company was simply Total. After Total's takeover of Petrofina in 1999, however, it became known as Total Fina and later, after acquiring Elf Aquitaine in 2000, the name changed again to TotalFinaElf. Then in 2003, the company reverted back to the name Total.

Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy[edit]

Total has its own foundation called the Total Foundation which is France's largest corporate foundation. The Total Foundation focuses on promoting art and the cultural exchange between different cultures. The foundation is dedicated to regularly sponsoring foreign exhibitions in France in order to increase awareness about other cultures and to increase the level of cultural diplomacy between France and foreign cultures such as Arabian, Turkish, African, American, and Asian. One such example was its initiative promoting African, Asian and American art in the Louvre museum and at the Quai Branly museum in Paris, France (two museums of which it is a sponsor). Other exhibitions it has sponsored include; The Dogon exhibition, displaying the Dogon tribe’s traditional statues from Mali; "From Byzantium to Istanbul: one port for two continents", “Archeology and history of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia”, “The Gates of Heaven" Visions of the World in Ancient Egypt.” Total signed a partnership agreement with the French government in 2009 to support Fonds d'expérimentation pour la jeunesse, which aims to identify and assess innovative social inclusion and workforce entry initiatives that could inspire public policy.

Employment Policy[edit]

The company employs about 98,799 employees from all over the world. Total tackles all forms of discrimination. The diversity of cultures, ideas and ways of thinking is the main core asset for the business. Their diversity is the result of a commitment, overseen by the Diversity Council, which ensures that they continue efforts to increase the percentage of women and non-French managers in the workforce, including at the most senior levels. Furthermore, Total tends to recruit and retain people with various disabilities.

Promoting Human- and Civil Rights[edit]

Total argues that human rights are one of its main values and they do not discriminate against women, people with disabilities and minorities. In order to foster gender equality Total has implemented different programs, initiatives and methods. For instance, hiring women in proportion to their numbers in the graduating classes of partner schools and universities; involving all stakeholders in our efforts, particularly HR teams and managers; promoting the same percentage of women and men with equivalent qualifications and experience from the overall; offering training to help women to more effectively manage their careers. Our target is a 18% women senior executive by 2015. (Total, 2014)

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid[edit]

Total has made a 1 million€ donation in Japan, After the Earthquake and Tsunami to the relief effort for victims of the earthquake. Being the wealthiest charitable foundation in France, Total supports several fields such as environment, culture, healthcare and various communities. Each year 5 million€ to 7 million€ is given to sponsorship initiatives undertaken by the Group’s subsidiaries. The Fonds d’expérimentation pour la jeunesse received €50 million in the period between 2009 and 2014.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts[edit]

In 2012 the partnership between the Foundation of the Friends and Patrons of the Opera Comique and Total has been renewed for the cultural and social development of Opera. The program facilitates access to musical culture and in particular to opera for people from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing support for educational programs aimed to young people. Another educational project called ‘Ten Months of School and Opera’’ has been created for young students attending schools in priority educational areas of Paris and Paris region. The main aim of the program is to enable student to explore the places and trades as well as professions in Opera. Another project supported by Total is called ‘’ Learn at the Opera House’’. The objective of this program is allowing the greatest number of people to discover the world of opera. Total has also supported the 2013 edition of the Festival of Aix-en-Provence. ‘The French Young People’s Orchestra’ project has been also supported by Total.

Supporting Sports[edit]

Several sport events such as the Dakar Rally World Rally Championship and Formula One has been supported by Total. The company also supports the young and talented Lotus F1 Team driver - Romain Grosjean. The Total foundation also sponsored the Envol association’s hospital complex for children in Echouboulains, France. The Envol association sponsored by Total offers sick children activities such as theatre, fishing, painting, video skills, and sports.
