Simon Busuttil (born 20 March 1969 in Attard) is the Leader of the Maltese Nationalist Party.

History

Simon Busuttil is the Leader of the Opposition in Malta and Leader of the Nationalist Party of Malta. He was a Member of the European Parliament from Malta from 2004 through 2013. A lawyer by profession, he specialised in European Affairs and has followed EU affairs since 1994. As a MEP he led the European People's Party (EPP) in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and covers issues that include the common European immigration and asylum policy. In June 2009, he was re-elected to the European Parliament with a record 28% of the national vote (68,792 votes), the highest percentage score in the EU. In 2012 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Nationalist Party. In the 2013 election, he was elected an MP of the Maltese Parliament. Other roles he hold are:

  • Partner, Ganado Sammut Advocates (1997- 2010);
  • Founding Director of Europa Research and Consultancy Services Ltd (1995- );
  • Visiting lecturer at the Department of European and Comparative Law (Faculty of Law) and the European Documentation and Research Centre at the University of Malta (1997-2004);
