Simon Busuttil was born the 20th of March 1969, in Attard. He is the Leader of the Maltese Nationalist Party.

Political Career[edit]

Simon Busuttil is the Leader of the Opposition in Malta and Leader of the Nationalist Party of Malta. He was a Member of the European Parliament from Malta from 2004 through 2013. A lawyer by profession, he specialised in European Affairs and has followed EU affairs since 1994. From 1997 to 2012 Simon Busuttil was partner at Ganado Sammut Advocates. He was also the founding director of Europa Research and Consultancy Services Ltd..

As an MEP he led the European People's Party (EPP) in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and covers issues that include the common European immigration and asylum policy. In June 2009, he was re-elected to the European Parliament with a record 28% of the national vote (68,792 votes), the highest percentage score in the EU.

In 2012 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Nationalist Party. In the 2013 election, he was elected an MP of the Maltese Parliament.

Simon Busuttil has been advisor on EU Affairs to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Education and Minister for the Environment from 1996 to 2004. He as been also the head of the Malta-EU Information Centre in which he was responsible for the Maltese Government's EU communications strategy ahead of the EU referendum from 1999 to 2003. Simon Busuttil was a Member of Malta's Core Negotiating Group for EU accession negotiations (1999-2003).

Education[edit]

Simon Busuttil became a Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 1993. He got a MA in European Studies from the University of Sussex,UK in 1994. He became a Magister Iuris in International Law from the University of Malta in 1995.

Simon Busuttil was a visiting lecturer at the Department of European and Comparative Law (Faculty of Law) and the European Documentation and Research Centre at the University of Malta (1997-2004)
