Pier Luigi Bersani

Pier Luigi Bersani was born on the 29th of September 1951. He is an Italian politician.

Political career[edit]

Bersani joined the Italian Communist Party and later the Democratic Party of the Left. As a member of the National Secretariat of the Democrats of the Left, he was responsible for the economic sector. He became vice-president of the Mountain Community of Piacenza and he was elected in the regional council of Emilia Romagna. From 1993 until 1996 he was the president of the region Emilia-Romagna. From 1996 until 1999 he was minister of Industry, Commerce, Craftsmanship and Tourism during the first Prodi’s government. From 1999 until 2001 he was minister of Transports and Navigation. In 2001 he was elected deputy for the first time. He was a member of the X committee for productive activities. In 2004, he was elected parliamentarian at the European parliament. He was a member of the committees for the EU- Kazakhstan and EU- Kirghizstan and EU-Uzbekistan cooperation. He also joined the Parliamentary Cooperation Committee for relations with Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Mongolia. He resigned from the European parliament in 2006 when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Italy. From 2006 until 2008 he was minister of Economic Development during the second Prodi’s government. From 2008 to 2009 he was minister of Economics and Finance of the shadow government of the Democratic Party. In 2009 he became the secretary of the Democratic Party however he resigned in 2013.

Education[edit]

He studied Philosophy at the University of Bologna.
