Thousands of athletes, from over 200 nations, participate in a variety of competitions in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Host countries usually start preparations 2-3 years in advance as the Games provide them the biggest opportunity to showcase their culture to the entire world. The first ever ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC in Greece. Although the modern Games have been modified a great deal since then, they continue to retain a unique historical legacy. The last Summer Olympics was held in London in July-August 2012. The next Games will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
