Emauele Fiano

Emanuele Fiano was born on March 13rd in 1963 in Milan. He is an Italian political and activist. He is an important figure in the Italian Jewish community.

Political career[edit]

In 1997 Emanuele Fiano was elected to the City Council of Milan and he was re-elected in 2001. In April 2006 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Italian Party Ulivo. In May 2008 he joined the centre-left Partito Democratico and was elected to the Constituent Assembly in the national primary on the list of Walter Veltroni. In the April 2008 he was re-elected with the Partito Democratico elections. He served on the Commission of Transport, Posts and Telecommunications in 2008 and the Committee on the Safety of the Republic from May 2008 to January 2010. He is the home affairs spokesman for the Partito Democratico. He has been also a candidate for regional secretary of the party in Lombardy.


Political activism[edit]

Emanuele Fiano is the son of Nello Fiano, a Holocaust survivor who was deported to Auschwitz. In his youth, Emanuele was a Jewish youth leader in the Hashomer Hatzair, a Socialist–Zionist youth movement in Milan. He was the president of the Jewish Community of Milan from 1998 to 2001 and director of the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy from 2001 to 2006. Since 2005, Fiano has been the national secretary of the political organization Left for Israel, which combats anti-Israel bias. He has promoted initiatives for inter-cultural coexistence, including Israeli-Palestinian dialogue. He has also supported the creation of a "Garden of the Righteous" in the Monte Stella in Milan.


Education[edit]

In 1988 Emanuele Fiano received a degree in Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan. In 2002 he received a PhD in Urban Architectural Design. Afterwards he worked as a freelance architect.
