Aristovoulos Spiliotopoulos was born in Patra in 1966. He is a Greek politician and member of the New Democracy political party. He has been an MP, Minister of Tourism and Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs. He was the official candidate of the New Republic in the 2014 local elections for the City of Athens.

Political Career[edit]

Spiliotopoulos was first elected as a Member of Parliament through the State ballot in the elections of April, 2000. In the elections of 2004, New Democracy won and Aris Spiliotopoulos was the second most voted MP in his region. This was not enough to take any position in the government formed by Kostas Karamanlis. In the elections of 2007, Spiliotopoulos was re-elected in the same region but this time coming sixth in votes for his party. In the elections of October 2009, Spiliotopoulos achieved first place for votes in his region for New Democracy, despite the general defeat of New Democracy. In successive elections in May and June 2012, Spiliotopoulos was re-elected despite a reduction in the popularity rating of New Democracy. He showed little parliamentary activity during this tenure. He resigned in February 2014 to become the mayor of Athens.

He studied Political Science and Economics at the University of Athens. After his graduation he completed a double Masters at City University London in Political Communication and Media.
