Anastasios (Tasos) Kourakis
Anastasios Kourakis was born in Thessaloniki in 1948. He is a Greek politician , doctor and writer.
Political Career[edit]
He joined the Communist Party as a member from 1975 to 1990 and from 1990 until today operates in Synaspismos and is a member of the Political Committee of Thessaloniki. For many years he was president and a member of the Hospital committees, and a member of the Board of the Medical Association of Thessaloniki, and served as secretary of that club 2000-2003. In 2002 and 2006 he was elected alderman of the municipality of Thessaloniki as the head of the municipal movement "Thessaloniki Citizens and Ecology." In the parliamentary elections of 2007, 2009, May 2012 and June 2012 he was elected as a member of Parliament with SYRIZA.
Education Career[edit]
He holds a graduate and doctorate of medicine at the University of Thessaloniki. He has been an associate professor of medicine at the University of Thessaloniki genetics laboratory and has the specificity of a pediatrician, but without practicing medicine as a profession. For 27 years he exclusively worked with teaching and research, he was trained in (Scotland, England and Holland), cytogenetics in prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. On the research field, he is primarily concerned with the environmental influences on human genetic material. The work relating to the effects of pesticides in the genetic material of farmers are the first to have been made in Greece.
Notable Work[edit]
Apart from academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals in Greece and abroad,he has also published three collections of poetry. He Also writes in newspapers and magazines on issues related to politics, education, health, genetics, cloning, genetically modified foods, drugs, etc.
