Azzopardi was involved in the Nationalist Party since his youth and was first elected to Parliament in 1998, and subsequently re-elected in 2003 and in 2008. During the 10th Legislature he served as Chairman of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee, as a member of the Privileges Committee, and as Head of Maltese Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. Following the 2008 general elections, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Revenues and Land in the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Investment. During the 11th Legislature he served as Minister for Fair Competition, Small Business and Consumers. Azzopardi was re-elected to Parliament in the 2013 General Elections.
