West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl heads east to Russia to meet with Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The two have diplomatic discussions as by this point, the Soviets have conceded East Germany, but Kohl wants reassurance from Gorbachev that a united Germany would be accepted into NATO. Gorbachev accepts this precondition, which is a major concession that Kohl greatly needs to help secure reunification.
