Sierra Leone is a small West African coastal nation, made up mostly of Muslim inhabitants but with a powerful Christian minority. Sierra Leone is widely regarded as one of the most religiously tolerant countries in the world, as religious violence is very rare in the country. Diamond exports make up a huge percentage of the country’s economic base, and Sierra Leone is widely known for ‘blood diamonds’, the diamonds they smuggled and sold in order to fund the atrocities committed in the Civil War. The Civil War was a result of the Revolutionary United Front’s attempt to overthrow the government in 1991 and lasted over 11 years, leaving over 50,000 people dead.
