Secularism is a political movement which promotes the separation of church and state. Secularists are not necessarily atheists - many are in fact religious - but they share the common belief that religion should not play a part in government policies. There are many state issues which secularists believe religion is too instrumental in shaping, for example abortion laws and education policies.
