Ostpolitik refers to the normalization of relations between the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and Eastern Europe, particularly the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was first implemented by Willi Brandt, the fourth Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1969 to 1974, who went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.
