Kate Winslet

Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire. She is an English actress and singer. She has been nominated for multiple film awards. She gained worldwide recognition through her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in James Cameron's Titanic, the second most successful film of all time. Winslet studied drama and began her career in British television in 1991. She made her film debut in Heavenly Creatures (1994), for which she received her first notable critical praise.

Humanitarian Causes

Winslet narrated the documentary A Mother's Courage: Talking Back to Autism. The documentary focuses on the autistic Keli Thorsteinsson and his mother, Margret Ericsdottir. Winslet’s involvement in the documentary led to founding the non-profit organization, the Golden Hat Foundation. The foundation aims to eliminate barriers for autistic people. For her work with the Golden Hat Winslet received the Yo Dona award for Best Humanitarian Work in 2011.

Philanthropic Donations

Winslet donated the £3,000 settlement she received in 2007 for a libel action against a UK magazine to 3 eating disorder charities. Winslet is also an ambassador for Cardboard Citizens, a theatre company for homeless people. In February 2008 a dress of Winslet’s was sold for $40,000. The money was donated to Cardboard Citizens.

Notable Actions

Winslet has always been very outspoken about her opinion on weight and diet. She refuses to allow Hollywood to dictate her weight. Winslet believes that women should accept their appearance with pride. Winslet is vegetarian and in 2010 she narrated a video for PETA, encouraging chefs to remove foie gras from their menus and asking consumers to boycott restaurants that serve it. In 2012 Winslet was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to drama.
