Professor Dr. Karl P. Donfried was born in New York City. He was also a faculty member and professor at Smith ollege. He also served as a visiting professor for Yale, Brown, Amherst College, The Hebrew University, and universities in Berlin, Geneva, and Hamburg.

Professional Career

Dr. Donfried was appointed to faculty of Smith College and then served as an Elizabeth Woodson Professor of Religion and Biblical Literature from 1968 to 2005. In 1997, the Episcopal Bishop of Western Massachusetts appointed Dr. Donfried as the Ecumenical Canon of the Cathedral and serves in that position presently. He has been a visiting professor a the University of Hamburg (1985) and the Yale University Divinity School (1993). He served as a Fulbright visiting professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1997) and at the Freie Unversität Berlin and the Humboldt Universität in Berlin (2004). He has written extensively for journals as well as authoring or editing his own books. Among those are: Who Owns the Bible? Toward the Recovery of a Christian Hermeneutic (2006); The Dynamic World: New Testament Insights for Contemporary Christians; The Romans Debate; The Theology of the Shorter Pauline Letters; Judaism and Christianity in First-Century Rome; The Thessalonians Debate and Paul; Thessalonica and Early Christianity.

Education

Professor Dr. Karl P. Donfried studied at the Trinity School in New York City. After, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College. After his Bachelor’s, he received his Master of Divinity Degree from Harvard Divinity School. Soon after, he received his S.T.M from the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Donfried then went on to get his Doctor of Theology from the University of Heidelberg.
