Jonas Åkerlund started his political career within the Socialdemocrats during the 70s. In 1985 he changed party to the Moderate Party and between 1988-1991 he was on the top of the partylist in Ockelbo. Jonas Åkerlund joined the Swedish Democrats in 1995 and in 2004-2005 he was the press secretary fot the party. The Swedish Democrats came in to the parliament in 2010 and that was when Jonas Åkerlund was elected to a member of parliament and also as the deputy party leader for the party.
