Helmuth Markov, born June 5, 1952 in Leipzig, is a German politician (The Left) and former Member of the European Parliament. Since 2009 he has been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. In January 2014 he became the Minister of Justice of Brandenburg.

Political Career[edit]

Markov was appointed as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister of Brandenburg on 6 November 2009. Markov was the first Left Party Finance Minister in Germany,

Markov's central task as finance minister was the consolidation of the Brandenburg state budget. He has aimed to sustainably reduce the expenditure of the country, including in particular a drastic reduction of the workforce in the state administration.

Since 25 March 2011, he is one of four representatives of the state of Brandenburg in the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.

On 16 December 2013, the Left Party announced that Markov will succeed the recently retired Justice Minister Volkmar Schöneburg.

Education[edit]

After graduating from high school and completing vocational training as a bookseller in 1970, Markov completed his engineering studies at the Polytechnic Institute in Kiev in 1976 as a graduate engineer in electrical drives and automation of industrial plants. He then worked as an employee in International Stock Trading from 1978 to 1990 as head of research and development of electronic systems in the VEB Lokomotivbau Electrical Works (LEW). In 1984 he completed his PhD in engineering.
