Hans Engels (born on August 21st, 1951 in Noordoostpolder) is a Dutch jurist and politician. On behalf of the Democrats 66 (D66) he is a member of the Dutch Senate.

Political Career

Until his appointment to the Dutch Senate, Engels was the leader of the Provincial States of Drenthe. Previously, he was councilor and deputy mayor of the Eelde municipality. Engels was sworn in on September 7th, 2004 as a Senator, as an interim successor of Jacob Kohnstamm. On May 29th, 2007, he was re-elected by preferential voting, and he is still in the Senate. Today, he is also the vice-chairman.

Engels is a member of the Senate Committees on Interior and High Councils of State, European Cooperation Organizations, Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and Health, Welfare and Sports / Youth and Family. In the past, Hans Engels was also the chairman of the Special Parliamentary Committee for the First JHA Council.

Education

Engels studied Dutch law (Public Law) at the University of Groningen until 1977.
