Education

Hon. Michael Farrugia has worked for 31 years as doctor, 21 of which he has served as a Member of Parliament. He graduated from the University of Malta as a Doctor and has worked as a family doctor. He is an active volunteer in the culture and sports sectors.

History

Hon. Farrugia was first elected to Parliament in 1992. He served as Minister of Health, Elderly Care and Family Affairs during the 1996-1998 administration. Hon. Farrugia was also a member of the parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe. Between 1998 and 2011, he served in the Maltese Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee and was a Labour Party representative in the Parliament’s Select Committee on IVF. Hon. Farrugia served as Main Spokesperson for Health, Elderly Care, Social Security, Social Welfare, Housing, ETC, Cooperatives and as Main Spokesperson for Consumers, Communications, IT and the Sustainable Development of the North of Malta. He was re-elected on the 12th District in the 2013 General Election. He was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Administrative Simplification in the Office of the Prime Minister in March 2013 and sworn in as Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity on 2.4.14.
